Academic Paper Editing
Academicians and skilled writers seldom come in the
same package, yet if there ever was a case where 'content is king,'
it's most certainly apparent in the academic paper.
We're talking serious consequences here, such as tenure,
advancement in a particular department, perhaps a book in the offing
or recognition of one kind or another. At the very least, your work
will stand pretty much naked before your peers. Let's clothe it as
well as possible.
Content is king
Having acknowledged that, a well-organized paper that speaks in
a language appropriate to the subject will float like cream to the
top of academic publishing. For many, outside your immediate peer
group, your paper is you. How you present yourself in a
published paper may affect
- Invitations to lecture
- Study or research opportunities abroad
- Advancement at your college or university
- Tenure
- Inclusion on important boards, panels or peer review groups
- A personal enthusiasm toward writing additional papers or a book
in your chosen field
You are what you have written or spoken
Unless you're extremely well-known in your field, your most public
face will be the words written in your name. Be sure they are the
best they can possibly be.
Whether it be academic writing, a research paper, faculty publishing
or for a journal, sympathetic editing is a must.
- Academic writing tends to get wound in its own terminology, which
is fine and certainly necessary. But when the rope twists too often
in the same sentence or paragraph, meaning can become distorted.
- If the paper needs to be a certain number of pages beyond the
point fo the actual information contained, resist the temptation
to say things over or in additional context. There is much to write
about past the bare bones and a talented editor can find entertaining
ways to properly exten text to fit requirements.

(for both of us) send me a paragraph and I'll work it over at no

After all, a proper fit is only as good as the cut
of the clothes.
