Editing Technical Writing
It has often been said of lawyers, that their job
is not to confuse a jury with legalese, but to make the case so clear
that the lowest member of the jury-pool can understand the facts
at hand.
That's good advice for technical writing as well.
Even when experts write for experts, the basic tenets of clear authorship
apply; clarity, brevity, interest. The best technical paper will
not be widely read if it does not hold the interest of its audience.
Your writing is unique and deserves the widest possible audience.
A great paper is only as good as the its ability to pull readers
into the conversation.
Excellent work deserves excellent editing, in order to
- make sure the focus is not lost
- logically order the argument
- correct run-on sentences and paragraphs
- avoid repetition
- polish the writing style, while maintaining authorial voice
