Editing Texts Translated into English

Perhaps the largest part of my editing work is devoted to unscrambling translated or non-native English speaker documents, mostly by professionals.

If 'unscrambling' sounds critical, understand that every language has its own semantic idiosyncrasies. There is a rhythm to language, a reason that confirms the prejudice of all poetry and prose being most powerful in the language of its origins. True enough.

Yet in the business, academic or technological world, what is not properly understood can be costly and, in some contexts, dangerous. As well, an article, book or application should sound comfortable to the reader. Comfort levels are the forerunners of acceptance levels, to which we all strive.

Like editors, not all translators are equal to the task. In both cases, it's vitally important to

• require a sample of their work on your assignment
• whenever possible, work with the same editor (or translator)
• be cautious of large firms that advertise a large, capable staff
• refuse a completed work that is below your own meticulous standards

Always remember, you are the work that bears your name.
